Joe is an awesome tour guide. He is very knowledgeable about the local wildlife and history of the area. It is always a very relaxing experience. Joe is also an excellent instructor who takes the time to make sure everyone is comfortable since safety is a top priority. Prior to entering into the water Joe provides instruction on how to hold the paddles and different stroke techniques. The tour was around Cold Spring Harbor. You do not go out on your own, Joe and Paul led our group. During the tour, Joe pointed out some homes of famous people (John Lennon's former home, Tiffany's former home, Watson's (DNA) home, and several types of wildlife, especially birds.
If its your first time kayaking this is the best place to learn. You can't go wrong with JKKayak. Groups are very welcome.Their equipment is also top-notch. JK uses Wilderness Systems' Pungo Kayaks, which in my opinion are very comfortable regardless of your size and extremely stable in the water. They glide very easily across the water. These are single person kayaks. There are no tandem kayaks available. I've made several trips with Joe (1 & 2 Hour trips) and will certainly be returning next spring. Trips are held at the Cold Spring Harbor, the Connetquot River and in Southampton. Check out their booking schedule online to make your reservation. Unfortunately, bathrooms are not readily available.
